ONE YEAR, ALL TOGETHER
Celebration Story
A visual story about a first birthday, a family reunion and the people who crossed distances to be there.
The Story
Emily’s first birthday was more than a celebration of her first year.
For this Brazilian family living in Canada, it was also a reunion.
Relatives traveled to be there — some meeting Emily for the first time, others seeing their children and grandchildren again after time apart.
The day brought together different generations, conversations, embraces, details prepared with care and the kind of joy that only exists when people who miss each other are finally in the same place again.
I wanted the gallery to hold all of that.
Not only the birthday decorations or the traditional moments, but the atmosphere around them: Emily discovering the day, the family gathering around her, the small interactions between relatives and the feeling of everyone being together again.
The Visual Direction
The visual direction was built around the celebration itself.
I photographed the décor and details as part of the environment, but the people remained at the center of the story.
The goal was to create a gallery that could move between the beauty of what had been prepared, Emily’s personality and the emotional weight of a family reunion — so that years from now, the photographs would remember not only what her first birthday looked like, but who was there and what it meant to have everyone together.
